ESPN and the media may have an East Coast bias when is comes to NCAA Men's basketball. It does seem that way at times because many of the best teams in the nation are on the East Coast. The most powerful conference is in the east, and many of the yearly storylines come from the east. Each year there are 65 teams that battle for a bid at the ultimate tournament. This tournament is the best finally in all of sports. It isn't a one game playoff, a computer run champion, or a best of seven series, but is a single elimination to determine the national champion. Of this madness the champion has been from west of the Mississippi 15 times since 1990; this alone documents where the best teams are located year to year.
The Atlantic Coast Conference is by far the best NCAA Men's Division 1 Basketball Conference. Every year they are putting just as many, if not more teams into the NCAA tournament than the other conferences. This conference holds two of the most historical teams in history in Duke and the University of North Carolina. Duke is known for their amazing team play and great defense. Coach K has a team first philosophy that builds the strength of a program because of the system ran. No one at Duke is bigger than Duke. Duke of late is also known for its three point shooting. This year is a big transition for the team and they are starting to look like a traditional Duke team. UNC on the other hand is currently ranked number one in every poll. They are undefeated, but have shown signs of weakness. Dean Smith the long time UNC coach is a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest to ever coach D1. As long as the ACC and SEC continue to win titles and beat west coast opponents their will always be a perceived east coast bias.
