Active learning is a crucial part of a successful education experience, regardless of the person, the level or education, or the situation. It is the active learner who will make the most of educational experiences by participating, engaging, and pursuing every learning opportunity. The mistake many people make in education is assuming that the education will come to them, and that they don't have to seek it out. Here are a few ways for the adult learner to be a successful active learner.
Take notes in class and while reading text
Taking notes may seem like an obvious part of education, but many people have gotten out of habit of taking notes. The advent of technology has made some people assume that note-taking is outdated. However, by taking notes an adult learner can engage the material and increase their chances of retaining and applying the learning outcomes. In addition, it helps the student stay alert in class and in tune with the instructor's presentation. Notes are also something that can be kept as a resource beyond the school environment.
Read the textbook even if you will not be tested on the material
With the advent of technology, many students have begun to feel that they can neglect the reading material. The reality is that textual learning is still extremely valuable for understanding the depth of knowledge. Reading allows the learner to supplement lecture and discussion material and seek out chances to ask more questions. There is sometimes greater depth and explanation in the text that cannot be covered in a class period. In addition, textbooks often have visual examples of theoretical concepts that can be helpful for understanding ideas.
Read supplemental material even if it is not required
Too often students evaluate course materials based on what will "be on the test" or what they will actually be accountable to review. Active learning is about getting as much from the course as possible, regardless of the grade, and treating education as an opportunity rather than just something to finish as quickly as possible. Therefore, it is important for the active learner to take advantage of supplemental material. Sometimes instructors will give students additional resources without the intention of testing them on the material. Their hope is that the student will have enough desire for knowledge that they will explore additional sources.
Ask questions and dialog
Active learning is about participation. Too often students will sit in class and maintain a passive approach. Granted, it can be difficult to raise a hand and admit that something did not make sense to you, but it is important to remember that education is truly about learning and there is no shame in admitting that you don't know an answer. If someone just wants to get through, then they aren't really actively learning. Asking questions and engaging in dialog with the instructor and other students can be a key part of maximizing the educational experience.
The phrase, "active learning" can seem like somewhat of a general or nebulous concept to understand. However, definitions should not prevent the adult learner from participating and making the most of their educational experience. As mentioned above, education is not just about getting through, it is about making the most of the opportunity to increase ones knowledge and understanding.
