Cake decorating originated with the simple idea of making a sweet treat look a little fancy. These days cake decorating has evolved into a full blown profession with millions of assorted ideas available. From a simple sugar iced cake to an exact replica of the Empire State Building, the possibilities are endless!
One of the best methods for making a cake look like it has fancy decorations is the use of tiny plastic toys. Dollar stores are filled with these little replicas that can work wonderfully for decorating. Try some plastic bugs for a Bug Cake, flowers for a Spring Cake, soldiers for a Military Cake, and kittens for a Pet Cake.
For some neat cake decorating ideas that an average person can create at home, try one of these:
BUG CAKE
- Use whatever flavor and color of icing you like best, and coat the cake in a smooth layer. Use unwrapped hard candies, like peppermints, butterscotch, or cherry as the bug body. Whip up some icing that contrasts in hue to the icing already on the cake. Use the new icing to give the bug four legs, two eyes, and even two feelers if desired.
- Scatter these bugs all over the cake, giving the impression that they're crawling around. Younger boys love these decorations.
DOLL CAKE
- My personal favorite as a child, an elegant doll cake. Either bake a bunt cake, or a regular round cake with a hole cut out in the middle. Use a cheap "Barbie" doll knockoff, or an old Barbie doll, and center her in the hole.
- Use assorted colors of frosting to make the doll a fancy dress. Cover the cake and the doll body in basic icing, then use the colored icing as lace, buttons, bows, and other fashion accents. Red, pink, cream, and white look great for this theme. Icing rosettes and bows look wonderful. Or try some fancy candy as dress embellishments, like M&M's, licorice, or sprinkle.
- If the cake doesn't quite fit that "skirt" look, use icing to build up whatever areas need work. If needed, cut a paper plate and bend it to make the top of the skirt, then cover in icing.
FLOWER CAKE
- There are many different ways to make a floral themed cake. An easy, but beautiful technique is to cover the cake in a smooth, shell icing in something like pink, and place real, small, flower blooms, like white rosebuds, on the top of the cake. Or try making a regular cream icing, sticking one red rose bloom on top, and scattering red rose petals around the sides of the cake as adornment.
- For a fun cake, use a thick green-hued frosting to really cover the sweet. Take assorted
