Fairway Solitaire by Big Fish Games is a card game with a golf theme. At first I thought I would have to understand golf to be able to play, but the game is fashioned after an on line game I used to play called pyramids.
The general idea of the game it to get as long of a string of cards as you can, while trying to clear all the cards off the board. You start with one card turned up and cards arranged in various configurations on the board, you can only play the cards at the bottom that are face up. You have to match cards either one up or one down from the face card. When you run out of moves you can turn over a new card from you pile.
What Fairway Solitaire does is take a basic card game and infuse it with a golf theme. You have par for each hand you play. If you beat, match of go over par the appropriate golf term for that score will come on the screen and sports commentator will comment on your score. The closer to or under par you get for each hand and course the better score you get and the more money you win.
There are cards in the deck and on the board that represent golf clubs that you can put in your golf bag and save for when you need then during play if you get stuck. Say you uncovered a 9 iron and it was put in your bag. You are stuck, but have a 10 showing; you can use the 9 iron to continue playing thus increasing the length of your string or drive. There are water hazards and sand traps that you have to uncover curtain cards to pay through, but not anything that a little strategy can't overcome.
During the entire game birds will file across your screen or bag pipes will play and announcer with really cool accents will make comments on your progress. Once you complete a course prize money will be awarded which you can use to buy new clothes and accessories in the pro shop. The tour will take you to different countries and in each country the backgrounds and sounds change.
The graphics are pretty simple, but at the same time not at all low budget and they aren't so busy that they take your attention away from the cards you are playing. The newspaper headlines between each course and the authentic sounding sports announcers are just icing on the cake for an already fun game to play. I give Fairway Solitaire 4.9 out of 5.
