Choosing a personal trainer

Working with a personal trainer can be intimidating, especially if you don't remember your last workout! However, a trainer can provide the motivation and knowledge to help you achieve your fitness goals. Preparation will ensure that you find the trainer who is perfect for you.

Finding a trainer whom you like and work well with is critical to success. If you dread going to your sessions, it will be hard to maintain your program. Before you start, sit down and think through exactly what you want from the relationship so you know what you are looking for when you interview prospective candidates. Here are some questions to get you started:

What is your price range? When and where do you plan on working out? If price per session is a factor, this can help you limit your search. Location can do the same: For liability reasons, many gyms allow only their own personal trainers to work on site. Make sure to check before you start a search for a private trainer. If you are available only certain times of day, make sure that the trainer has availabilities that match yours.

What are your goals for your exercise program? Different trainers may have different specialties. If you are looking to drop 20 pounds, you may want a different trainer from someone who is training you for a marathon or weightlifting competition. Make a list of specific goals that you would like to achieve, and ask potential candidates what experience they have training people with similar targets.

What kind of motivation are you looking for? Every trainer has a different style. Do you want someone with a more aggressive, serious style? There are many trainers out there who know how to push their clients to their limits. However, others might benefit from a gentler, friendly approach. Would one of these styles frustrate you more than motivate you?

Is gender a factor for you? Many people feel more comfortable with a trainer of their own gender. Before you start your search, decide if this is going to be a consideration.

What other questions do you want to ask the trainer? If you have any health concerns or injuries, you may want to ask how he will work those into your program. If you are looking at a private trainer, make sure she has liability insurance and can provide you with a written copy of her business policies. Also, you should check to see what sort of certification she has. There are many nationally recognized associations that certify personal trainers, such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Council (NSCC).

Do not be afraid to meet with as many people as you need to find a trainer whom you feel comfortable talking to. It might be beneficial to ask a potential trainer for references from other clients. You can ask them questions about how their sessions were working for with the trainer and how the trainer met their needs.

Hiring a trainer is a wonderful step toward achieving your health and fitness goals. Take time to narrow down the field and find the perfect fit!
