Vegetarianism: The different types

When people think of Vegetarians, they think of people who eat nothing but vegetables. Moreover, for the most part people who are not vegetarians believe that a vegetarian diet is boring; some think it all tastes like cardboard. But this is all very far from the truth, but like different types of lifestyle choices vegetarianism is merely the title of the category though there are many topics within the category. To explain further I will try to break down and simplify the various types of Vegetarianism.

There are several types of Vegetarianism but some of the main types are:

Lacto - ovo - vegetarianism - These types of vegetarians don't eat meat but do eat product that come from animals, like dairy products for example butter, milk, cheese, yoghurt and eggs. This is what the actual name means Lacto is dairy and Ovo is eggs, many European Vegetarians come under this type.

Lacto vegetarianism - Lacto Vegetarians are very like Lacto ovo vegetarians in what they eat, the only difference is that Lacto Vegetarians don't eat eggs because they see eggs as animals and so the refuse to eat any meal that uses eggs in it.

Ovo vegetarianism - The next type are called Ovo Vegetarians and although they are similar to the other types of vegetarian lifestyles, the main differences are that they don't eat meat or dairy products but do eat eggs.

Demi vegetarianism - Demi vegetarianism is usually the first step towards the vegetarian lifestyles, Demi Vegs only eat fish, vegetables, dairy products and eggs. They do not eat beef, pork, chicken, lamb etc.

Veganism - Vegans are by many believed to be the strict and true vegetarians, they neither eat nor use anything that is or comes from any type of animal products. So that counts out clothing made from animals and they avoid beauty products that have been tested on animals. Therefore, for vegans its more than a lifestyle choice, it is their beliefs and the philosophy they live by.

There are many reasons why people choose to become vegetarians for some it is health for others it is ethics, to some there choice of vegetarianism can be traced to the environment and then there are the feminists.

Vegetarianism is a healthy option to ones lifestyle because it has various nutritional benefits, like it can help to lower your saturated fat intake while giving you higher levels of carbohydrates, fibre, magnesium, vitamin C and E and potassium. It has been suggested that the vegetarian diet can help people reduce there body mass and live longer.
