Every person has had his or her fair share of embarrassing moments. I am no exception. Fortunately, I am able to look back on some of those and laugh. And, when I think of my most embarrassing moment, it still brings a huge grin to my face.
As a youngster, I had many odd jobs. I mowed neighbors' lawns, raked leaves, delivered newspapers, and washed cars so I could have a little extra spending money. Then, when I was 16, I finally got myself a "real" job. It was at a local grocery store as a bagger. While it wasn't much, I was still proud of it. I worked very hard, and caught the eye of a great number of management personnel. And, within a year, I was promoted to the produce department.
I was so excited, I couldn't wait to get home and tell my mom and dad. They were so proud of me. My mom hugged me and my dad gave me the "high-five". We all went out to dinner to celebrate.
Working in the produce department was much different than bagging groceries. You had to receive loads, break them down, and then put the product out on the tables and racks, concentrating upon all the add items first, because that is where the money was. Still being in high school, I was only able to work evenings. Typically, my shift was 3PM to 9PM.
I was always the type of person who enjoyed new tasks and challenges. I would even go out of my way to volunteer for some of them. So, when a company-wide apple table contest was announced, I eagerly volunteered for it. A $100.00 cash prize was awarded to the produce department that had the best designed and best looking apple display.
My boss asked me to lay out the design and tell him exactly what types of apples to order and how many as well. I did everything that he asked me to do. My plan was both bold and imaginative. First, I would bring in every type of apple available at our warehouse. Second, I would stagger all the colors, so the display would be very striking. And third, I would spill over each and every display with the corresponding boxes of each particular apple. That way, I would create one massive display. It was going to be just fantastic.
So, all the apples came in on our Thursday truck. When school was over for the day, I rushed home, changed into my uniform and off I went to work. I had just six hours to complete the entire display. It was going to be judged early Saturday morning by virtually every supervisor in the district. Working right through my lunch break, I finished everything in record time. It looked magnificent!
