of her emotions, trying to retain something of her. And then the bulk of her psyche is gone and I snap back into myself, see her body dying, feel myself frozen. MOVE! Someone is screaming, I think it's me. Her eyes are wide, her mouth open. I feel as if it is my own life's blood draining away, red on her pale blue jumpsuit, melting the snow.
I feel light-headed, I taste bile in the back of my throat. And then I feel the cloudy remnant of her soul slip away from my mind, thinning out until it is wispy. And then there is nothing left to grasp, although my panicked mind scrambles to hold onto hers. But there isn't room for two of us in my body, that isn't the way it is meant to be and I know that but I try anyway.
Shard advances mercilessly, an insane grin on his lips, a red slash in a pale face, his eyes bloodshot and hair flaming in the firelight, on fire. Lily's eyes are glassy before her blond head hits the ground with a burst of powdery flakes, her face framed angelically by the fur of her hood. If Shard is red, Lily is white. Even when it is obvious her spirit has fled to the Goddess, her body continues to dance as blade after blade hits her.
I try to step forward, to scream my rage. I even try to hit him with a blast of my empathic power, my iree. But nothing responds, not my body or my mind. I am paralyzed, as I was then, in the face of her death. It was so abrupt, searing, hot and coldlossI feel it again as if no time has passed. The pain of my throat straining to scream is what wakes me up.
