As someone who has traveled to Russia not once but twice; here are a few ideas on how to have a good trip.
In planning for a trip to Russia plan on packing EVERYTHING! The provinces of the former Soviet Union are modern cities, but about 40 or 50 behind those of the United States.
Unless you plan on being recognized and singled out as an American tourist DO NOT dress in bright colour, shorts, very short skirts, halter tops, etc. Dress conservatively. For females a head covering would be useful.
Pack all personal items, especially female, even if you aren't sure whether or not you will need it including toilet paper. Chances are pretty good that it will be very difficult at best to locate anything your forgot. Items like toilet paper are nothing like what you find in the US.
Ladies, avoid carrying a purse of tote bag if possible; they are easy for pickpockets to pilfer. Instead use hip pouches and the like. If you must carry a bag make sure that it is one that can be closed and keep it closed at all times.
Even in summer pack a jacket of some kind because it can (and did) get cold. It might be good to pack things that you won't mind bringing home. There are certain customs that Russians expect of foreigners.
Presents to give and items to trade - blue jeans and cigarettes - are very popular. If you are with a tour group a banquet at the end of the trip is expected. Drinking is also a big part of Russian life.
Remember; NO ONE can out drink a Russian, so save yourself a lot of problems and don't try. If you are a non drinker the best way to get a Russian not to push you is to tell them you are allergic and they will leave you alone.
Traveling to a foreign land is a big opportunity. Take a lot of photos, not just the people, of the places you go. When buying souvenirs try to use Russian money and avoid spending "real or hard" currency.
The most important thing to remember when taking a trip to a foreign land like Russia is to enjoy yourself and have a good time!
