An introduction to classical music

Typically associated with the wealthy and elite in society, classical music transcends generations and has weathered the ages beautifully. Many people hear the term "classical music" and immediately make a decision that they are not interested. However, a brief introduction into this music genre may quickly change their minds!

The classical period actually began in the 9th century with the heaviest period of emphasis from the 1500's through the 20th century. Many of the early innovations and discoveries related to music, and particularly musical instruments, began during this time.

One of the most significant things to evolve from the early classical music era was the sonata form. The sonata form makes music more interesting and is used as the basic framework for a symphony as it is restated throughout various musical pieces. It is what makes the great symphonies so exciting and thrilling.

Great musicians like Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Strauss made their debut during the classical period. Instrumentalists, chamber music, and the symphony all provide variations on music genres and they each offer something different for their audiences.

Classical music is actually more accessible and heard more widely today than ever before. Through the advancement of technology and integration with today's composers, it is used in movies, book stores, restaurants, and television routinely. The exciting thing about today's technology is that it offers everyone an opportunity to partake in classical music without the intimidation of attending an opera or dressing for the symphony.

Classical music crosses all cultural, intellectual, and social barriers and has been incorporated into today's pop music in many ways. Think about the music you hear in Star Wars' and 2001: Space Odyssey' and you will quickly realize that classical music is beautifully melodic and intriguing.

Adagio', allegro', and crescendo' are just examples of the many musical terms used in the world of music. Many of these terms originated from the classical music era and continue to provide a basis for pop music that is created today. But it is not necessary to understand these terms to enjoy the pleasantries of classical music.

The exciting thing about music is that you don't really have to understand the history or development of what you hear. All you have to do is take the time to listen and decide what you like. Take a chance to try new types and styles of music and you may learn that you enjoy classical music.

Music opens up a world of possibilities for the earnest listener. Whether it's Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" or one of today's popular selections, music creates a world that would otherwise be boring and dull.

Pop music will come and go and it changes with the time. But classical music is here for centuries to come give it a try and you might like it!
