Adult education: How to stay motivated

Staying motivated during the long process of obtaining an education is not always easy. And if you're an adult who is returning to school, possibly after decades of working and raising a family, staying motivated can be downright difficult. For adults still raising families and working, staying motivated has its own particular challenges. It needn't be a daunting exercise, though. There are strategies that can be employed to stay inspired and motivated.

WHAT IS MOTIVATION?
Motivation, as applied to education, is what keeps us on track to fulfill a passion for learning and a thirst for knowledge; it spurs the mind and spirit to greater heights. It is the spark that ignites our mental and physical engines to strive toward higher achievements. An educational goal left languishing in our youth for the pursuit of other interests can be re-examined after adulthood is reached.

Motivation to add to our education as adults leads us to schools and classes that will serve our purposes. Knowing that higher education will improve our lives and our wallets is inspiring, but staying motivated is quite another story. Once the newness and initial excitement of being a college student wears off, the reality of the long road ahead looms, and it is up to us to find ways of keeping ourselves actively engaged in the learning process.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO STAY MOTIVATED?
Realize what a privilege it is to be able to attend classes with other adults. Like-minded people with similar goals are good motivators. Many times, the feeling that "we will all get through this together" is enough to inspire us to work hard through difficult learning situations.

Professionals with well-established careers in your eventual field of work are inspirational. Watch how they work and speak with them about your aspirations toward their profession. They will be happy to share with you what inspires them and makes their work worthwhile.

Do your best to achieve to your capacity and potential. If you are an A student, be proud of that. If you are a B - C student, work with that and don't fret about not getting A's. If you're an A student getting C's, check to be sure you're truly on the right path. If you can manage a really good grade on a particular assignment or exam, it may be motivational enough to snap you out of a rut and get you back on track.

Make use of breaks and time off to do something fun, away from your studies. Take time for family life, friends, and your hobbies and interests aside from school.
