Movie reviews: Eastern Promises

I must say, considering all the hype that has surrounded David Cronenberg's last three films, I have not been impressed. However, "Eastern Promises" displayed a more patient, mature Cronenberg approach that I felt was completely absent from 2006's "A History of Violence." This time around the director again employs his new favorite actor, Viggo Mortenson, as the central character - a man who may or may not be whom or what he seems, although we know for certain that he is capable of some gruesome acts of violence - in a sordid tale of a newborn's connection to a Russian mafia family operating in London. Mortenson has thrust himself deep into character here, and by this point in early 2008 has already chalked up several end-of-the-year acting award nominations for the part. Every performance here is right on the money, as Cronenberg's ability to cast seasoned character actors in underwritten roles pays off very well in "Eastern Promises." I won't reveal too much of the story - it is a convoluted plot with many characters and situations - but know this: Cronenberg's approach to the material is like nothing he has done before. Always a bit overboard on the blood and gore, he at least exhibits a tiny bit of restraint in this film, considering the violent subject matter, but still has plenty enough to keep his die hard fans happy. Again, I cannot reveal too much because the less you know about this dynamic film, the better the rewards. I will impart, however, that the performances are all terrific; the production design, music and cinematography are all first-rate; and the fight scene in the men's steam room is sure to become a classic.

I am not a Cronenberg fan. I think he typically goes over the top with his onscreen violence and gore to the point where it becomes inane and distracting - much of my problem with "A History of Violence" - but here his handling of the story and its dark themes and characters is a real treat. I hope this is a sign of one of our oldest filmmakers making a transition into maturing director with a few new tricks up his bloody sleeve.
