Horror has got to be one of my all-time favorite genres. Having played several games of this nature on many different consoles, I decided to give Night of a Million Billion Zombies' (NOMBZ) beta demo a try. And I have to say, I wasn't disappointed.
NOMBZ is a 3D shooter game that's all about getting out of a zombie-filled city alive. To me, it was rather reminiscent of games like House of the Dead, but from a third person point of view. In the demo version, you're given a single character to play, but the full version boasts 5 playable characters and 25 levels of game play. As you progress down the city streets, you're greeted by the shambling dead. Armed with a pistol and a tire iron, your goal is to kill zombies while getting yourself and any survivors you meet out of the city before you all become lunch. I found it rather amusing that several of the zombies didn't want to stay dead, and had to be killed over and over again until they finally expired for good.
The graphics themselves are done in what reminded me of comic book style art. Though relatively simple in nature, they definitely add to the feel of the game. The graphic demands shouldn't be too difficult on most newer systems, and I really liked the overall shading and rendering of the game.
In my opinion, the game controls are a bit touchy, but simple to use. Movement is accomplished by using the alphabet keys W, A, S, and D. The rest of your character's actions are controlled by the mouse. The right and left mouse buttons control your primary and secondary weapons, while the moving the mouse itself turns your character and the camera. I found the fact that the camera angle was adjusted by moving the mouse up or down a bit inconvenient, as I often found myself with an awkward view of what was going on in the game.
The sound in the game was great. The music that the developers added in adds to the ambiance, and gave the action of the game a more light-hearted feel. In other words, it didn't have the same "jump at every noise" effect that many horror games employ; which goes along with the intent of the game to entertain rather than scare.
Overall, I thought the game was pretty creative. Although it takes a few cues previous action shooter games, the concept as a whole was quite good. Personally, I actually enjoyed the demo run quite a bit. All in all, I would have to give this game a 4 out of 5 rating, taking just a bit off for the awkward camera controls. Other than that, it was fun! And let's face it who doesn't enjoy bashing a few zombie skulls now and then?
