Taking on-line classes is becoming an increasingly common part of higher education. However, it is definitively a different experience than being in the classroom. Some people find that they love the experience, while others find that they have some difficulty adjusting. Here are some suggestions to make the experience a positive one.
Don't assume it will be less work because you don't have to "go" to class
One of the mistakes that people make is assuming that the lack of classroom time will mean less work. The reality is that the instructor is charged with filling that time with other content, such as reading, writing papers, and participating on chat boards. Rather than being able to stare into space while you the teacher lectures in a regular classroom, you'll be expected to read and write quite a bit.
Make sure you stay on top of the work
Another mistake people make is not participating on a regular basis. Some students are used to "cramming" all their work in at the end of the week, or the night before the class is scheduled. On-line classes requires regular, sometimes daily, participation. Taking a few days off can have a disastrous effect on your success, particularly if the instructor is monitoring participation.
Take advantage of the time to really read people's comments
One of the benefits of on-line education is that you have the time to digest and process the comments of others. In a classroom settings, someone may make a comment that includes several ideas. Your brain typically picks one of them and responds, but other ideas may get lost in the shuffle. In an on-line setting, you can take the time to analyze and respond to everything someone says. This is particularly helpful for introverts who do not by nature jump into verbal conversations.
It seems clear that on-line education is here to stay as people enjoy its convenience and alternative format. Make sure you prepare yourself mentally for on-line classes before taking them so that you aren't taken by surprise. They can be a vital part of your education, but they are not to be taken lightly.
