The game World of Warcraft sparks controversy whenever it is mention in conversation. Some people adore the game and others despise it, others haven't even heard of it.

The reason for these varied views is simple the addictive factor of the game.

However before the argument gets any further, here is a brief explanation about the actual game itself.

World of Warcraft is an online RPG, or role-playing game. Players can create characters and then head out into the vast game world and explore. There are missions to complete, items to find and you can team up with your friends to defeat stronger enemies and missions that would have been impossible to do on your own.

These are endless possibilities for what you can do and this attracts players almost as much as the opportunity to meet new people and travel in groups to defeat quests. After all it is more fun to play a game with friends than on your own; it lends a sense of comradeship that you do not get when playing alone.

The majority of the arguments over this game are about the addictive quality of the gameplay. Players of the game will lose hours of their time to the simple, repetitive style of the game's mechanics, all in aid of gaining that little more respect within the community for reaching a certain level. It is a reflection of real life, but it is also a world where those who receive little attention in the real world can really shine and show that they are not worthless. This is where the addictive side comes into play.

If you have the best armour sets, the best weapons, and if your character has reached that mythological level 70, then you are regarded as one of the elite. You will be one of those who are allowed to take part in the special missions at the end of the game which allow you to gain even better items and take part in battles that could not be accomplished at a lower level.

The game rewards those who work together and those who become strong and reach higher levels. The rewards and the added social aspect of the game wherein you can join parties to complete quests is where the real addictive quality is.

When you play with friends the missions are never the same each time, as you cannot predict what a human player is going to do as opposed to a computer controlled character. There is the opportunity to chat to others through an in game version of MSN, which keeps people playing so that they can chat about what they are doing with others doing pretty similar things.
