Movie reviews: License to Wed

Movie Reviews: License to Wed

I rushed to the theater to see this movie. I saw it the day it came out. Why? Because I LOVE John Krasinski, who plays Ben in the film License to Wed. Krasinski plays Jim Halpert on The Office, and he played a very Jim like role in this film. The film is about a newly engaged couple who have three weeks to endure a marriage training course with their crazy Reverend Frank, played by Robin Williams. Director Ken Kwapis has worked on The Office, and had several of the shows actors in the movie, but if you're not an Office fan, that did nothing for you. License to Wed is a movie I would call likable. Mandy Moore plays Sadie Jones, Ben's controlling, yet sweet fiancee. Krasinski is a great guy, but this role did nothing to show his comedic skills like The Office does. It was apparently not the breakout film role he wanted or needed to start that phase of his career. Mandy Moore plays the same role she plays in every other move with a droll quality that people like. I just find it boring and repetitive. I just saw Because I Said So, and realized Moore was playing the same character. Again. Robin Williams was a little too over the top for me in the role of a minister who doesn't know how to stay out of people's business. At this point in his career, Williams is obviously a comedic legend. After doing a few films of the darker nature, Williams realized that comedy is what he was born to do. He does it flawlessly, the character of the reverend, however, was just too predictable. This movie is a movie that tried. Kwapis pulled out all the stops, but the script just wasn't strong enough for it's actors. The role of Ben's best friend, was completely irrelevant and unnecessary. He just got Ben into obvious trouble. The movie wasn't bad, it just wasn't good either. It was sweet and funny. It was all just very obvious and exactly like every other romantic comedy ever made. Mandy Moore has done better. Robin Williams has done much better. And the adorable John Krasinski is better on The Office every week. I'm sure his film career will fly with the right role, this was just not it.
