Driving to Distraction

In the heated debate on cell phones, I am a firm believer that they should be banned while driving. Statistics don't lie, accidents occur more often in incidences involving cell phones. In fact, motorists are four times more likely to get into a serious accident when using one of these devises. I mean let's face it, we only have two hands and one brain. It takes all of these things to actually drive properly and safely. Multitasking just doesn't cut it behind the wheel.

I agree, cell phones are a technological wonder; alleviating inconveniences and are a monumental instrument in saving lives in emergencies. But not everyone uses them wisely, especially when it involves drivers and cell phones.

Last year I had a real close call. A motorist sped past a stop sign and nearly rammed right into my car. I could literally see the horror on his face as he slammed on the brakes, just missing me by mere inches. I supposed the whole episode had scared him and it should, he needed awake up call. I thank my lucky stars nothing happened, had a collision occurred he would have hit the driver's side straight on. Statically, I would not have walked away from that accident unharmed or in one piece for that matter. What was his reason for his carelessness? Yep, he was too busy on his cell phone to pay any attention to a simple thing like a road sign. Apparently, this kind of thing happens all the time, but what really angers me is that people just don't get it. That man was playing a game of Russian roulette, had the weather conditions not been in his favor, his near miss could have just as easily ended in tragedy.

Just the other day a young woman made a left hand turn at a lighted intersection. Sure the light just turned green and all, but she did not have the right of way, I did. As luck would have it I was not in a rush and saw her speedy advance in time to weigh my options. I chose to stay put. What irks me is the fact that she never acknowledged her close encounter, she'd been too busy with her social life to even see that there were other cars in her midst. That one phone call could have literally caused an accident and to this day she still has no clue.

How many times have you seen a person turning a corner, head crooked to the side with one hand gripping the phone and the other holding the steering wheel? Does this make you mad and really should you even care? You bet, not only should you raise
