Summary of mathematics principles

The principle for school mathematics enforces accountability for the way mathematics is taught to students. The first principal is equity. This principal pushes the need to teach on a level which all children can comprehend. It is not meant to lower the teaching standards. What it indicates is higher goals are needed to be set, and all students should be prepared to meet these goals. By increasing the goals all schools and teachers are being held accountable for the mathematic success of their students.

The second principal of curriculum helps to develop a logical plan to meet the new mathematic goals. A school system needs to look at the mathematic program from the beginning stages of counting to the advanced stages of algebra. This results in the design of an articulate curriculum which spans over several grade levels. Once developing the goals of the curriculum a teacher needs to reflect on the way math should be taught.

The third principal discusses the approach of teaching mathematics to the students. It needs to be taught in a manner which expands on the students' prior knowledge, and focuses on what they need to learn. The teaching approach used should help to build the students self esteem and also be motivating. This principal interconnects with the fourth principal which is learning. If the teacher is successful the student will display a good understanding of mathematics. They would be able to build on new concepts presented to them and incorporate what they already know.

By using the fifth principal of assessment the student is given a test. The test assesses information on the student's achievements. This is both valuable to the student and the teacher. The student learns how much they have retained and the teacher discovers if adjustments need to be made to their curriculum.

The sixth principal of technology should not be overlooked in the curriculum. It could be used to help a learning disabled student achieve higher test scores. Using technology can also help to prepare the student for the high tech lifestyle of the real world. When each principle of mathematics is incorporated in the curriculum it is hoped the student will display a better understanding of the problems presented to them. If the school achieves this goal then they will be able to prove their accountability towards higher education.
