When it comes to options for countertop grills, the GT Xpress falls short of its competition. While the listed benefits of the product are that it is small, portable and cooks food quickly, the manufacturer fails to mention that it is nearly impossible to clean and could be a potential health risk.

Even when sprayed with non-stick oils such as PAM, residue can be tough to remove without a scrubbing sponge and some old-school elbow grease. If you neglect (or forget) to use a non-stick spray, then the frustration compounds.

On top of the problems in cleaning the GT Xpress, after only a few uses the non-stick surface itself begins to flake off in spots. Whether this is due to shortcomings in the manufacturing process, or from excessive scrubbing to remove stuck-on food I cannot be sure; either way, this presents somewhat of a health risk when cooking foods in the unit. The last thing you want in your omelet is chips of black resins.

There are some positives, however, to the GT Xpress. The deep pockets allow the user to cook more substantial amounts of food at one time than many competitors. This is probably the biggest advantage the grill has over competing grills. Most other indoor grills of this nature have flat surfaces on top and bottom that make certain foods awkward (or impossible)to cook on them. The quick cook time is also a plus for the grill. Most foods can be thoroughly cooked within a matter of minutes.

Overall, the GT Xpress does cook foods quickly and efficiently as advertised. It is also very competitively priced with other similar products. In the end though, the cleaning troubles and concerns about the durability of the cooking surface make this grill hard to recommend to other consumers. Go ahead and spend a little more money for a better engineered and manufactured piece of equipment.
