Myths about low-carb diets

Most people think they know what a low carb diet is. Unless you've studied one of the many low carb diet plans, you probably have a few misconceptions. Do you know the most popular low carb myths?

It's only water weight Yes, some of the weight you lose, especially at first is water. However, you need to lose water in order to lose those pounds of fat you have stored up. The water flushes out your body and carries away the fat. The quick loss in the first week or two motivates you to stay on the low carb way of eating.

Your organs will liquefy Some people think that if your body doesn't have carbohydrates to burn, it will start breaking down and using your organs for energy. What happens is that your body starts breaking down the fat that you have stored up. Isn't that the idea of dieting?

Your brain will be destroyed This is another twist on the organ liquefying myth. I had a coworker tell me that it would destroy the brain if you ate less than 100 carbs per day. Guess my brain is really in trouble.

You can't eliminate an entire food group My doctor said this to me. It just shows you how much nutrition is covered in medical school. Carbohydrates are not a food group. You can't cut out all carbohydrates, even if you tried. There are carbs in most of our foods. Even eggs have about a half a carb each.

You can't have fruits or vegetables All plans allow fruits and vegetables. Most low carb plans restrict certain fruits and vegetables during the first few weeks. Low carb fruits and vegetables are encouraged by most, if not all, of the low carb plans. Some fruits and vegetables are high in carbs and need to be rationed. A potato has more effect on your blood sugar than the same amount of pure sugar.

People on low carb diets eat bacon and cheese only The types of meat matter in a low carb diet. Processed meats need to be limited, just as other processed foods should be. A low carb diet emphasizes real food prepared naturally. It really is a healthier way of eating.

All the weight will come back People who successfully lower their carbohydrate intake usually make eating low carb a way of life. Once you change your eating habits, keeping the weight off isn't a big battle.

Study the diets plans and learn the truth for yourself. Don't take anyone's word about different diet plans. Study the diets yourself. Then you can enjoy hearing and debunking the myths surrounding low carb diets.
