Considering that most cats spend between 16-18 hours a day napping, you'd think that playtime isn't one of their priorities. However, cats need the physical exercise and mental stimulation provided by a few good toys. So what are the best toys for your feline friend?
At the Store
If you are going to go to the store and shop for cat toys, the best ones are always the simplest ones. Cats by nature are attracted to anything that has a texture to it. If it crinkles, crunches, or rustles, chances are good that it will keep kitty interested. Bonus points if it contains catnip.
The old tried-and-true toy mice are always a good choice as well. You can find them in affordable multi-packs of varying colors, materials and sizes. They are often stuffed with catnip as an added treat. These are great because they allow your cat to embrace his "inner hunter" and satisfy his urge to stalk his prey.
If your looking for another option, there is always the scratching post. A large majority of indoor cats will take to scratching the furniture if they are not given an acceptable alternative. This is where scratching posts come in. They come in various sizes and can range from very simple to very elaborate (and expensive!). You can also find all kinds of cat furniture (or "kitty condos") that are made of carpeted perches and hiding spots, that also have the benefit of being constructed with scratch-friendly posts.
At Home
Fortunately, you don't have to spend a fortune to entertain your cat; you don't even have to leave the house! Cats are naturally curious and it takes very little to amuse them. Here are some suggestions for "recycled" cat toys you can make from things you have lying around the house.
Paper bags (not plastic!) are a favorite toy among felines. It could be the texture of the bag, or the fact that it doubles nicely as a hiding spot. Whatever the reason, be sure to pick up a few extra paper bags next time your grocery shopping and your kitty will be grateful.
Another favorite among cats are empty boxes. Soda boxes, shipping boxes and even shoes boxes have all been, at one time or another, claimed as sleeping/playing areas by my cats. Just make sure there is nothing dangerous left inside the boxes before you give your cat the OK to play.
Last, but not least, is string. I can't tell you how many times I've done a load of laundry only to find that one of my cats has taken the drawstring out of a pair of pajama pants or a hooded sweatshirt. Find some unused string and use it to entice your cat into play. Dangle, shake or throw the string and it's a guaranteed good time for your cat.
As you can see there are plenty of options when it comes to cat toys. The possibilities are endless. Just remember that cats can get bored very easily so be sure to change up the repertoire of toys on a regular basis to keep your cat entertained.
