Short stories: A sports mystery

Suspects;
Jack Stenson
Sam Dawson
Zachary Fairway
Peter Ford

The vibe was electric. Popcorn, hot-dogs, and cotton candy bobbed in the air amongst the rippling waves of spectators that had adorned the stadium. Today was the day. The whole city had hung up the baseball gloves and hockey sticks, left behind the macho football and gathered in unity to watch the most important sporting event of the year, The California 500m freestyle swim.

OK I say most important sporting event of the year, although that may not be entirely true. It is most certainly applicable if you are one of the few hopefuls participating in desire to attain a fully paid university scholarship though.

As hopeful cheers, knowledgeable whispers and black book betting engulfed the stadium, the fearful anticipation of one boy lurked backstage. This was to be the single day that would determine his whole future.

Sean Scanlon, An average looking boy, aside from the overwhelming orange hair, and, fruitful freckles that ornamented his face. Sean was in fact of Irish origin, specifically of that of the traveling community. That is right, Sean was a settled Itinerant. Now he himself would prefer to reflect upon himself as a man of the world. The harsh reality remained though Sean was in desperate need of this chance to break free from his inherited destiny.

Sean's silent anxiety was abruptly interrupted by the sharp shrills of what seemed like a cat being strangled or misfortunately tortured. The noise however, stemmed from what could only be described as a small plump mass of more ginger follicles. It was indeed his older sister Mary Anne Francis Bridget Shauna (long winded names were a family tradition) more commonly known as Molly.

"Seannie me dear, how are ya? Gee if mammy could only see ya now!"

With that she erupted into a volcano of tears.

"Lord knows I never thought meself we could get this far, but, just look at you me wee boy, all grown up, ready to fly the nest. You're a good wee man do ya know that Seannie?"

Sean nodded hastily afraid to say anything that could warrant a response.

Molly left Ireland at the tender age of 17 after a whirlwind romance with Bobby her present husband. On her first trip back to Ireland 3 years later she witnessed the poverty she had previously left behind in the trailer parks. Taking pity on her youngest brother Sean (then only 5) she persuaded her parents to let him go and live with them in America. Sean's parents already having 15 other children to water and feed willingly
