Great bulbs for early spring

Bulbs are defined as any plant that has the capacity to store food underground. For early blooms, make sure you get your bulbs in the ground before the ground freezes. Make sure the bulbs are firm and that the sprouts are not too prominent. And make sure they are free of damage and disease. Larger bulbs often produce larger blooms. Plant in well drained soil, I have a compost heap that is wonderful for adding to the soil, you may also add sand . Most bulbs thrive in the sun, however blooms last longer if they are not in full midday sun. Crocus, Hyacinths, and Daffodils will also flower in partial shade. Make sure to read the planting instructions for details. The instructions should also include a zone map to estimate when your ground will freeze, of course we all know from last year that its hard to predict.

Early flowering bulbs include:

Cyclamen
Hyacinths
Grape Hyacinths(Muscari)
Jonquil Daffodils
Tazetta Daffodils
Single late Tulips
Darwin Hybrid Tulips
Species Tulips
Crocuses
Irises
Grecian windflowers(Anemone Blanda)
Poppy Anemones(Anemone Coronaria)
Blood Lily(Haemanthus)
Snowdrops
Winter Aconite
Small Aliums

Bulbs are wonderful and easy to grow. You can also force bulbs to bloom when you want them to. Most require being placed in a cool, dark, dry place for on average four to six weeks depending on the species. Be prepared to be amazed year after year, I have bulbs come up every year in places where I didn't even plant them. But you can always dig them up and move them where you want. I have irises that I dig up and give away because I have way too many. And don't forget about your late spring, summer, and autumn bulbs. I know you will love them all. I do! Now go grow something! Happy Planting!
