Beginner's guide to snowboarding competitions

the top time rider selecting his starting position first. A starting position can make or break a rider, since it is imperative to get off a clean start. However all courses are different, and the best starting position differs. This competition is judges entirely on time, however, there are officials carefully watching for any jostling or unfair competition. Read through all the rules, and if possible, study the course for fair advantages.

Finally we have the racing competition. There are three different types in this competition, however, they all have the same rules, and the length of the course is the only difference. The most common of the competitions, it pits two riders against each other down a slope course. This is similar to the slalom skiing competition, as each rider has his own course to run, and skies around flags. This event is based exclusively on time. You must go around each flag correctly, or that is grounds for disqualification. A fall does not mean disqualification, however, it is difficult to recover from a fall as well as to maintain you position on the correct side of the flags. Make sure to understand all the rules, as well as study the course when the opportunity presents itself.

To enter a competition, sometimes it is required that you compete to qualify. However, this is only with the more advanced levels of competition. Otherwise you need only fill out a form, mainly containing you name, age, skill level, area of competition, and perhaps sign a waver.

Different levels of competition:

Finally the different levels of competition are beginner, intermediate, and professional skill sets. Then they may divide each level into age groups. Most competitions will have all of the above.

I would recommend, if possible, that you attend a competition before entering one. This will give you experience, and comparison against other riders and their skill levels.
