Paying for website traffic is similar to taking hostages; they weren't specifically looking for what you're offering, but it's being forced upon them.
That's all well and good... if you only want them to glance at your content once and never come back for more.
You don't want that.
What you want is a bunch of repeat readers - people who come back time after time because they're interested in what you have to say. It all boils down to one simple fact, whether you're writing for Helium, promoting your business, or want people to read your ad-splattered blog: the more views you get, the more money you make.
There are a few steps to success; it's not an overnight, one-stop solution. As long as you remember that, and you stick to a few basic guidelines, you're almost guaranteed to have positive results. Traffic equals money in your pocket - never forget that, because that's what will keep the fire under your behind kindled.
CONTENT
You need good content. It's as simple as that. If you've written something for the web, it's got to be readable, informative, and accurate. If your article doesn't embody those fundamental traits, don't you dare hit that "publish" button.
If someone is reading your content and thinks that it looks like you ate a Wikipedia article and then barfed it up into Microsoft Word, you are wrong. You're wrong for these reasons: Wikipedia isn't the world's greatest source for correct information, you should be creative and unique, and above all, you have failed to make the reader recognize your talent. They won't come back for more if they think they can find what they're looking for somewhere else - you've been officially dropped like a hot potato.
MARKETING
When you've got good content, there's only one reason that your article is languishing, unread. It's not getting any traffic. Internet traffic has nothing to do with "Field of Dreams." Just because you wrote it, that doesn't mean they will read it - so you've got to do a little self-promotion.
Self-promotion takes time and effort on your part. The work you do now, though, will turn out to be your bread and butter in the long run. Start by adding a signature to your e-mails; it only takes a minute to set up your account to include it automatically. That signature needs to have a link to whatever it is that you're promoting.
After you've done that, surf the internet to find a niche you're comfortable in. For example: if you write a lot about pets and animals, join a few pet tips message boards and forums.
