What to do when you hate your job

Many people find themselves in a job that causes them mental and physical distress and serious dissatisfaction. They actually feel like they hate their job and there is nothing they can do about it.

But there is something that can be done!

If you find yourself in a job that does not provide the professional and career satisfaction you are seeking, it is time to evaluate your situation carefully. It may not be the job that is the problem but how you are approaching the job. Your attitude towards your job makes a big difference in how effective you are and how much you enjoy it.

Taking time to conduct an honest self-evaluation is the first step in changing your situation. Think about what you don't like about your job and then make changes to improve your situation.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ask yourself if you have the skills and abilities necessary to perform well in the job. Think honestly about this as you evaluate the job to be done. Would you enjoy your work if you had more experience or skills? Do you need additional training or mentoring to perform at an optimal level. Make sure that you have the tools and training to do the job effectively. If you don't, then take steps to get the proper training and support you need to increase your confidence level and ability to do well.

MOTIVATION

Determine your motivation for doing the job. Is it solely to get a paycheck each week to pay the bills? It is important that you find a job that utilizes your skills, experience, and education. But it is also important that you enjoy what you do and that the job fulfills a need or desire in your life. What makes you want to get up every day and go to work? Decide what would make you enjoy your job more and then evaluate options at your current job.

Are there changes you can make to increase your job satisfaction? Maybe you work in a call center but you don't enjoy being tied to the phone all day. Are there other customer service functions which don't require you to be on the phone constantly? Would you prefer to work with people face-to-face? Talk with your manager or supervisor about potential opportunities to cross-train for other jobs and find something that is more suited for your personality. If you are motivated to do a job because you enjoy it, you will do a better job.

ENHANCE YOUR KNOWLEDGE

If you are in a job that you dislike, you need to think about the future. Is this a job that offers you an opportunity to grow and advance so that you are doing something different in the
