Thoughts on Writing

Why you're never too old to write

You Are Never Too Old or Too Young to Become a Writer:

Senior citizens and children are often faced with ridicule when they announce to the world that they are going to take on the challenge of becoming a writer. Young people laugh at old people and tell them: "You are too old to write!". While parents chide their children by telling them: "You are too young to write." Unfortunately for the rest of the world, all too often the one who dreams of writing, quits before they can get started, because they believed those who would falsely dash their dreams.

Think about it this way: If you can pick up a pen and write on paper, things that you imagined in you heart and mind, than how can you possibly be too young or too old to write? You know how to write. You have the desire to write. Forget about age and write. I mean, how often to you see a person walking down the street and you stop and say to yourself: "Oh he must be a writer, he's the right age for it." What is the right age for a writer? Every age!

Maybe what we need to do is looking deeper into the idea behind who the writer is, rather than what the writer's age is. What is a writer? And how does one take the step from being a writer to become an author?

A writer, simply put is one who writes. Everyone who writes on a regular basis is considered a writer whether or not they have ever been published. If you are a three year old, who writes a 16-page book that is more picture than words, but still tells a story, than you are a writer. If you are a 103-year-old great-grandmother and you write a poem for your great-grandbaby's 16th birthday, than you are a writer.

Writers can mean those who write for newspapers or those who write fiction, those who write for medical journals, or those who write TV sitcom scripts. They all write. They all get Writer's Block. If I was to start detailing all of them, I would have to write an encyclopedia on the subject, so, for the sake of simplicity, in this article, we will assume that a writer is one who writes fiction in novel or short story format. Now, back to the question: What is a writer?

A writer is someone who writes, probably every day or nearly so. Usually they feel compelled to write, as though they have no control over it. It is as though they will die if they cannot write something down. Their every fiber burns with the sensation, the uncontrollable passion, that they must put words to paper in order to survive. They feel every emotion their characters
