Making the most of your unemployment

Sometimes the path that we are on is chosen for us, and sometimes we choose to go down it. People become unemployed for a variety of reasons. It could be that they were downsized, laid off, fired, or in a dry spell. It could also be that they are seeking change, and decided to quit for some down time and self evaluation. For whatever reason you find yourself in this position, you need to take this time, and make the most of it.

Being unemployed can be a very scary time. The fear of not knowing when your next paycheck will come, or when your funds will run out can be enough to send even the most cool, calm and collected individuals into complete panic. Fright can lead to depression, and depression can stall any diligent efforts at job searching. Worrying has got to be the biggest waste of time and it accomplishes absolutely nothing. None-the-less, worry is a normal reaction to the unknown and we all do it. How do you over come this? It takes practice and conscious effort, but you have to be the boss, and you have to only allow yourself 20 minutes a day to think about the negative and to worry over your woes. You have to make it a designated time each day, and only do it during that time. At all other times of the day, you must force this negativity from your mind. Positive thoughts equal positive actions.

It is a fact that the reason college degrees are so desirable, aside from the knowledge gained, is because it shows a commitment to follow through on your endeavors. If you find yourself unemployed, whether it be for a month or six months, consider going back to school. What will this do for you? Well, it will show employers that you have a desire to stay up to date, it will show employers that you are doing something worthwhile with your time, and not just sitting around collecting unemployment. It is a boost to your resume. It will give you a new credential to add to that resume.

Many certifications can be obtained in a matter of weeks such as Medical Billing/Coder, Paralegal, or Medical Transcriptionist. If you have your degree already, you might consider going onto your Masters program. A Masters degree usually takes a year and a half to two years depending on your schedule. if you have six months off, you could be well on your way. And when you do go to interviews, you will be able
