Making the most of your unemployment

objective with volunteering, it is certainly a benefit of the experience!

5. Take time to enhance and update your resume so you are ready when an opportunity arises. Think about things you have accomplished in prior jobs or community activities and include those on your resume. A polished, updated resume will help you to get your foot in the door when the right opportunity arises.

6. Today's abundance of information and resources on the internet are an incredible opportunity for you to evaluate job options during this time. Study the open jobs and determine your best fit. Set aside a specific amount of time each day to search the job boards for open jobs and apply for those that are most attractive to you. Don't rely solely on the job boards though you need to proactively reach out to potential employers and follow-up your application with a phone call. Remember that there may be literally hundreds of people searching for the same job and you want to stand apart from the competition!

7. Unemployment is a disruption in your normal daily life and you no longer have the reason, or sometimes even the desire, to get out of bed. Don't let this happen to you. Make a schedule for yourself and adhere to it as much as possible. Get up at the same time every day. Set daily or weekly goals for yourself and develop an action plan to attain those goals. Create your own destiny by taking charge of your situation and your life!

Unemployment is difficult for almost everyone, but it also offers an opportunity to participate in, and experience things, that you would not have been able to do otherwise. Use the time wisely and create opportunities for yourself by taking positive steps towards your future.

Although you may not have asked for this time of unemployment, it might be a blessing in disguise. Don't let the opportunities pass you by!
