Any soccer team will tell you that it would rather have the 3 points for a win rather than no points in a game but look stylish in defeat. Stylish losing play doesn't really truly exist or the team wouldn't have lost would it.
Success is the only concern of any team striving to win their respective league. Soccer is big money business nowadays and each team has a board of directors, owners, and shareholders all looking to make profits from a successful team. The financial backers only concern is success, because that brings in money. Stylish teams that win no silverware are useless to them.
Success also breeds style. When a team starts out on a successful run of results they gain confidence. Confidence then brings more freedom to play with flair and style. What team struggling in the lower echelons of a division have the confidence to add stylish play to there game? Very few, I assure you.
Brazil are a classic example of style and success being blended together beautifully. the Brazilian ethos is first and foremost to win, but they also like to play attractive football to entertain its audience. Their formula has been so successful that they have won the greatest prize in soccer an amazing five times. With this massive success came the confidence to play 'the beautiful game'. Try to imagine if you will that Brazil had never won the World Cup. Do you think they would have the confidence to play with such freedom and elan? Their desperation to win the trophy would bring nerves and tension to their game and style would be the last thing on their minds, winning will be the be all and end all.
The meaning of stylish football also varies from viewer to viewer. Some may find a stout defense stylish to watch, where another may like to watch a team that goes for broke in every game but lets in hatfuls of goals due to the inability to defend.
Style does however put bums on seats and fill football stadiums but only if that style brings a degree of success. Without having a blend of both, teams will lose the faith of their fans and sit in the lower tiers of the league.
