I agree with the Writer's Guild and their current strike. Writers are just as important in the production of a television show as the actors and producers, if not more so. Why shouldn't they get their share of the profits? They've already proven how necessary they are. Even comedians like David Letterman are lost without them and for good reason. Without them and their consultants, they just wouldn't be funny as they are now, and I wouldn't be as smart as I am now. It is because of television writers that I now know how to solve crimes using math. I have the theoretical knowledge of how to insert a central line (while I have never physically done it, it is still nice to know that I could talk someone through it). I am abreast of all of the mythology surrounding vampires and witches, and I can spot a fake from a mile away. I can make a bomb using a paperclip and some bubble gum, and I can rebuild my boyfriend's motorcycle at the same time. I have even learned the best ways to kill someone without getting caught. If I do get caught, thankfully, I know exactly how to escape from prison. For all of this knowledge and more, I owe so much to the television writers. Because of them I am able to impress all of my friends with my learning on a variety of topics, without batting an eyelash.

With the current onslaught of so-called reality television, writers become even more important than ever. Just who would I be if I was forced to suffer through relentless seasons of Survivor, Big Brother, The Great Race, and The Real World? How could I live without seeing such shows as The Swan, Extreme Makeover, The Osbournes, The Two Coreys, and Celebrity Rehab? I like shows that challenge me. When I finish watching something, I like to know that I didn't waste my time. While I haven't accomplished something in the physical sense, I have learned something, and that in itself is something to be proud of. I like to be mentally stimulated, and there is something to be said for sitting with a like minded group of people around the lunch table while chatting about last night's programming. While I hope that the strike won't go on too much longer, I have faith that I will survive on reruns. If worst comes to worst, I can find some relief among the lesser, plot less, educational channels.
