Life is too short to spend hating your job. In my last position, I dreaded going to work so much that my body fought me almost daily as I struggled to get out of bed when my alarm went off. The stress levels from my position were unhealthy. I found myself sick, stress-eating, and depressed. I knew I had to get out of that toxic position.
Do you loathe your job? Does simply the thought of having to go to work upset you? Are you unsure of what to do? Try some of the below tips to improve your situation.
1. Look for a new job. Yes, this seems so common sense. However, sometimes we spend so much time and energy on things we truly dislike that we feel drained emotionally and physically when we get away from those things. Schedule time each day or week to look for something that can be more fulfilling for you.
2. Self-assess. Do you keep picking jobs that aren't a good fit for you? What is your motivation? If you are in a job because it pays well but you otherwise hate it, perhaps you can find another job that pays similarly that will be more in line with your interests. Do you dislike your boss or your co-workers? If so, what is it about them that you dislike? Perhaps you would find happiness in a non-traditional job where you are your own boss or have much more flexibility with hours and interactions with others than the job you're in now.
3. Talk to your supervisor. It could be possible that some frustrations you are having are due to things within the control of someone who has power to change them. Sometimes changes that are implemented don't work out. Giving feedback and having a respectful, honest conversation about areas of dissatisfaction can be a big step toward changing your situation. It might not be that you hate your job but rather that you hate an aspect of your job that can be fixed.
4. Network. Your co-workers, family, and friends may know someone in a field you are interested in learning more about. You can gather more information about a specialty or company before you leave your current position. This might help stop you from jumping from one bad situation into another.
5. Go back to school. Perhaps you have always wanted to try something that you have no experience in. Perhaps you want to make a career out of a hobby. Or maybe you aren't sure what you want to do at all. Getting trained on different industries will help build your skill set and appeal to prospective employers.
6. Start saving. The process of finding a job can be a long, tedious one.
