Hybrid drive cars are still sort of in the proving stage and there are more and more manufacturers getting into the hybrid business every year. Now whether they are cool or uncool is kind of a stupid question I think. The question should more appropriately be, "Are hybrid cars practical and will they be the car of the future?" I know there are sure a lot of them on the road and they are not just the little bitty cars any more
If I am not mistaken, the Honda Insight was the first car that was available with the hybrid drive system from Honda Motor Cars. They were ugly and strictly a two passenger vehicle that had very little room in them for anything but two people in the. I didn't see any of the Broncos offensive linemen driving them. They were small but... they got seventy five miles per gallon and would run interstate speeds with no problems.. I had a friend who had one and loved it except for the size and he said you really had to be on the ball if there was a strong cross wind. He has since traded it for a Hybrid Honda Accord and loves it but it doesn't get near the mileage his Insight did. He can take his wife and kids with him now though ans still not go broke buying gas. I think Honda does a real good job with their hybrid cars and like all Honda's they seem to be very dependable and have very little maintenance problems.
Toyota has several hybrid models and they sell like hot cakes. That Toyota Prius seems to be kind of like rabbits, They are all over the place. Before I retired, I drove to Colorado Springs From Denver and back everyday for five or six days a week and they would pass me going seventy five or eighty miles per hour and I had several people claim they were getting between forty five and fifty miles per gallon. I really like the new Camry Hybrid and would seriously consider one of them if I didn't love my Volkswagen Jetta TDI so much. That little 1.9 liter turbo Diesel gets me fifty six miles per gallon plus most of the time and that is running anywhere between seventy and ninety miles per hour depending on the traffic flow.
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a nice sized Sports Utility Vehicle and it gets thirty to thirty five miles per gallon according to the adds.
Saturn has come out now with two Hybrid models but I am not very familiar with them or how they are performing. Saturn has always been a good vehicle though so I am reasonably sure that they are doing well. Ford and Mercury both make small Sports Utility
