safety, it means take him into controlled settings where you are 150% sure that you can protect him if need be. Teach him to respect other living things and to associate people with wonderful rewards.
At about six months your cuddly companion will begin to hit puberty. At this stage they need to go in and be 'fixed' to prevent health issues, personality changes and unwanted litters. Having them neutered/spayed will keep them happier and healthier as well as keeping your hair from going gray horrifyingly quick. All dogs experience changes in their body as well as their personality at this point of life. This is when it's very handy to have already taught your pup basic obedience. Puberty for dogs is a bit like the 'rebellious teen' stage in humans. hardheadedness and sudden inability to remember their manners will happen. Positive reinforcement is very effective with this breed, they crave affection and if they know that in order to receive it they have to perform appropriate behaviors they will remember their manners much better. Remember the APBT is a determined, eager to please breed. They will do what they've been taught if you use positive reinforcement (IE treats, praise) and consistency.
PICKING A 'JOB' FOR YOUR APBT:
The APBT is very well suited for search and rescue, therapy, guide and service work, agility, weight pulling, carting, scootering and many other fun sports. Their desire to work needs to be filled by something. Not all of these will work for every person however finding a weekend job for your dog will help produce a healthy, happy partnership. Which ever you choose remember, it's not just for your enjoyment it's for the health and happiness of your four-legged friend.
Don't forget a Dog is for LIFE! Research your breed and make sure that the individual pup is a match for your home and lifestyle. They are not toys to be discarded as the novelty is lost.
