How to raise a Pit Bull

Bully breeds do require a bit extra. The Bully category includes the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, The American Pit Bull Terrier and many others. The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) was originally used in bull baiting. When this became illegal, they were taught to fight other dogs. Their eagerness to please and determination makes them very adept at learning a job and doing it. Genetically, Pit Bulls have been bred (when they come from quality lines) to have little or no human aggression. They are a working breed and that desire to perform a job plays an important part in their upbringing. The APBT is NOT a breed suitable for first time owners, nor is it suitable for people who do not have patience and the ability to 'play fair'.

APBT pups are the typical pup; they cause trouble, make messes, eat everything and they love to play. Many APBT puppies teeth earlier than other breeds which means they need plenty of quality chew toys. Socialization, proper medical care, socialization, training and (did I mention socialization?) quality exercise are very important in the raising of any puppy; socialization is even more important for APBT puppies because of their natural loyalty and physical power. From a very early age they need basic obedience and socialization. This will help them grow into model canine citizens who are trustworthy and dependable. When you bring your wriggling puppy home the first thing you need to do is start crate training. This is for your sanity as well as for the pups safety. Make sure the crate is ONLY associated with good things, (IE crate=cheese or crate=pig ear). Make a strict schedule and follow it. This also assists in house training. Start small and work your way up to longer periods.

The next step in your new life (assuming the pup is vaccinated) is to start teaching the pup to accept a leash and behave politely. Remember the earlier you start and the more consistency you show the quicker and smoother this transition will be. Basic obedience is a must. Sit, stay, down, off, enough, heel and many others will make life easier and happier for both of you. The APBT has quite a bit of variation in energy levels however they are usually mid to high energy dogs. They need at least 45 minutes of good solid exercise EVERY day. When little fur-ball is comfortable walking on the leash start taking him out and introducing him to the world. This doesn't mean take him anywhere and everywhere without regard to his
