Poetry: Danger

Look both ways before crossing the road
Listen carefully for speeding cars
That are, as yet, un-seen

Never talk to strangers
Don't buy into the lost puppy or free candy stories
It's probably not true
And someone's out to hurt you

All these things
and so much more
that I have tried to protect you from.

But how?
Dear God
How, do I teach this child that I love so very much -
of the dangers of the heart?

How can this young person begin to understand
the danger -
In loving the wrong person
the danger -
In giving your heart
to someone that will take and take
Rarely giving anything but pain in return

Proceed with caution
