Movie reviews: I Am Legend

by Noah C

Will Smith proves himself to be a great actor, capable of convincing dialog, and more importantly in this film, gripping and meaningful monologue.

The premise of the film is haunting yet simple, a 'cure' for cancer has been developed, and is deployed via a virus style system. This process ends up endangering the human race, as the side effect of this now airborne virus is the dehumanization of everyone, except the select few who are immune.

As an eminent scientist and ranking officer of the US Army, Will Smith is privy to important information regarding the virus and the governments attempted response, in this case a quarantine of Manhattan Island.

Soon, it is clear that although Will Smith is immune, no-one else is, and he is left to lead a lonely life in the now somewhat rural New York landscape.

The following story I will leave for you to judge and form your own opinions on, but for my money, Will Smith carried off the monologue immaculately, and is eminently watchable. His interplay with only a dog for company is excellent and conveys the loneliness and desperate nature of the situation whilst also preserving the human desire for ultimate success or redemption. A new type of role for Will, and one that he carries of excellently.
