Here is a masterpiece. 8 of 10.
The shining is Stanely Kubrick's nightmarish ride into one of Stephen Kings visions of horror.
In it, jack Nicholson takes his family (Shelly Duvall and Danny Lloyd) to live in a ski lodge that has been closed down for the winter. Totally isolated in the mountains and surrounded by the weird and haunted castle, Nicholson slowly loses his mind in a brilliant and terrifying slide into homicidal madness.
Whole the pace is a bit slow by modern horror movie standards, this movie is unparalleled. The setting is gorgeous. Even just the opening sequence which is a series of flyovers of Nicholson's car as he drives out to the lodge, leaves you with a clear understanding of the isolation that will dominate the rest of the movie.
Nicholson is famously creepy. You can still buy posters of him in this movie down at the mall. Duvall is nicely helpless and desperate. Danny Lloyd, who was seven at the time, is perfect for the role, cute, pensive and convincingly terrified "redrum redrum."
In a side note, the "steady cam" was invented for this movie so that Kubrick could follow his actors uninterrupted through their daily lives and show like at Danny's level.
Awesome movie y'all. Check it out.
