Helium's guide for writing effective reviews: For movies, books, products and more

Writing movie reviews is fun and easy, if you follow a few simple guideline.

First. Don't blow it. The reader is not looking for a full description of the plot, they're looking to see if they're interested in seeing the movie. Good plot descriptions in movie reviews are intentionally vague. Just give the audience enough to turn them on or off and then move on.

Second. Remember that characters and actors are two different things. Talk about both.

Third. How did the movie feel? Was it well filmed? Were the scenes claustrophobic? The atmosphere of a movie will sometimes make or break for a viewer. For an extreme example, remember "The Blair Witch Project." It really doesn't matter to me what the plot was about because the cinematography was so bad I couldn't watch it.

Fourth. readers always like to know interesting details. Was the book better than the movie? Is this the fifth movie the director has made using this or that star? Readers eat this stuff up.

Fifth. Movie reviews need action words. Awesome! Amazing! Lame! The more motivated you are in your review the more motivated your reader is going to be. Let it all hang out! In movie reviews, you are paid to be loud mouthed and opinionated. Live it up!

Sixth. Movie review should be short. 'nuff said.
