can't just be straight-forward romance, because if that were the case it would be "They meet, they fall in love, they get married, the end". No novel would sell if this is simply what it was. Trying to find just a few novels that fit into each of these genres on my bookcase was a fun exercise, though it was less than simple to select just a few to be classified as my favourites.
1) Mediaeval Historical Romance: Ransom by Julie Garwood. This is my ultimate favourite romance novel, it has everything. Brodick is a hardened Highland warrior. It is well known that he and his soldiers all live in a very Spartan manner, but his hardened heart has no strength when he meets Gillian for the first time, and realises that for all her independence, the bruised, battered and angry English maiden needs him to protect her no matter her protests. Ransom follows the story of Gillian and Brodick as they hastily marry and try to grow accustomed to each other, while trying to find a box that holds the answer to a Royal murder mystery 15 years old.
2) Regency Historical Romance: Once and Always by Judith McNaught. Though her later Regency romances were rather week (Until You and Almost Heaven), this earlier novel by McNaught is wonderful. When Victoria Seaton and her younger sister Dorothy are orphaned after their parents die in a carriage crash, they are sent to live in England. Victoria has always been in love with Andrew, and is sure that her time in England will only be temporary. While Dorothy is welcomed at the home of their grandmother (a woman they had no idea existed), Victoria is sent to live with Charles Fielding, a man who was in love with her mother but chose to marry for money. To Charles, Victoria is a chance for him to make up for his past mistakes and he immediately announces her engagement to his illegitimate son Jason. Jason however, isn't so happy about the developments and does his best to prove that he has little to no interest in the young American orphan who has no idea at all of what is going on. When Charles realises that things aren't going the way he planned at all, and he receives a letter from Andrew, he manipulates the soft-hearted Victoria and his life-hardened son into marriage, praying that things will work out. Victoria has no idea what Jason wants from her, and having witnessed only her mother's empty marriage to her passionate Irish father, is nave to a man's wants and desires. With all the misunderstandings between them, and Victoria's realisation
