As a new mom, I was captivated by all of the "stuff" available to make life with a new baby easier. I thoroughly enjoyed my baby shower and all of the adorable little outfits and gadgets. But because baby stuff is all so "cute" . . . after a while, I couldn't remember who had given me what. The thank you notes were all sent and life went on. When I was called on to give a "new mom" gift the next time, I found myself wanting to give something that my friend would remember. For those of you who have had similar thoughts, the following ideas might be helpful.

1. Give the gift of your time. You can make homemade vouchers to put in with a baby gift that your friend can trade for various "services" to be performed by you after the baby arrives. This can be anything from a home cooked meal delivered to her door to running errands for her while she takes a nap.

2. A gift certificate to her favorite restaurant. If you're really close to her, you can add an offer to watch the new baby while she and her significant other go out. However, don't be surprised or offended if she wants to take baby along.

3. A gift card to a bath and body store. If you know her favorite scents, a nice gift basket filled with bath products and lotions would also be nice. If you're not sure, the gift card will give her the option to get out of the house and have some alone time while she shops.

4. Subscription to a parenting magazine. New moms are usually happy to have any information they can get their hands on about being good moms. These magazines are a great way to give her a little parenting advice, pampering hints and just good entertainment all rolled into one package.

5. Buy her a massage. Make sure you purchase it from somewhere reputable like a spa or a masseuse with whom you have personal experience. Those tense neck and shoulder muscles from nighttime nursing could use a little TLC.

6. Offer to take her for a pedicure once she's ready to get out again. Chances are, she hasn't been able to reach her feet in a while and would love the chance to get them back into shape. As a bonus, she gets an hour or so to chat with other adults while she is pampered. If your schedules aren't compatible, give her a gift certificate for a pedicure.

7. Offer and arrange ahead of time to clean her house while she's in the hospital. There's nothing more relaxing than coming home to a spotless house. She'll probably be spending a lot of time at home for the next few weeks so starting out neat and tidy will be a huge blessing.

These are just a few ideas that will make any new mom feel special. The key to finding that perfect gift for your new mom friend is to know your recipient. Any gift you give with an especially personal touch will tell your friend you care enough to know her tastes and to give her something exclusively unique to who she is.
