Reflections: Why I enjoy summer

Summer is the best season of the year. The summer sun, lounging poolside with the kids and extended family, and grilling and eating until our stomachs are content are incomparable enjoyments of the season.

When school is out for the summer, the kids and I can sleep until our bodies feels like waking up. We get to see the sun peek through the blinds and listen to the birds sing a morning lullaby; it makes me feel so alive.

There's nothing as spectacular as summertime outdoors. Looking out at the Santa Rosa Mountains and watching children mountain climb, families picnicking at nearby tables, and sighting wild animals scurrying about, are unforgettable summertime moments.

Afternoon golfing games, a tennis game or two, and soccer on the lush green lawns are more family favorites under the spectacular summer sunshine. And then coming indoors after a noon game and sipping on iced cold sun tea is refreshing and tastes better than any home-brewed pot.

Jumping into the sun heated pool and playing a game of volleyball or water baseball and hearing the kids laugh and splash is music to my ears. The sounds echo throughout the neighborhood and family playtime is at its best in the summertime.

Coconut scented suntan lotion and chamomile lip balm fill the summer air as we cruise down the river on the pontoon. Taking the wave runners out for a glide across the water is even more enjoyment offered in the summer.

BBQs are turned on and meats and veggies are grilled. The smell of heated peppercorn and garlic smoking off the grill fill the air with tantalizing scents. Plastic cups filled to the brim with strawberry/mango slushy are endlessly slurped.

Watching the summer sunset ever so gently and slowly descend upon the horizon with lavender, blue, and lilac colors highlighting the desert beiges are more beautiful than any artist is capable of capturing on canvas.

The heated days clear the skies for starry nights to be appreciated by all. Gathering under the sky, lying on the patio chairs, and searching for The Big Dipper, The Little Dipper, and The Northern Cross are more summertime enjoyments.

There's nothing like staring up into the darkness, watching the stars sparkle, and culminating the evening with a sight of a falling star.
