As I watched the proceedings on Draft day last June, all the New Yok faithful, including current Knick David Lee, applauding and cheering the announcement that the knickerbockers had acquired Zach Randolph, I too applauded. No, I'm not a Knicks fan but a long time Blazer fan and before I even heard who my beloved Blazers got in return I was giddy with excitement that they had finally moved this knucklehead.
Ridding themselves of Randolph was addition by subtraction. Sure, Z-BO can get you 20-10 any night but numbers fail to tell the whole story. On the court, despite his production, Randolph was a defensive liability, a terrible passer out of the double team and a player who spent way too much time arguing with refs instead of running back on D.
Then there's his off the court antics, which were plenty. Randolph was known to always be accompanied by his posse wherever he went. A posse that helped him continue the embarrassing legacy of Blazers the rest of the basketball world had dubbed the Jail Blazers.
To get an idea as to the kind of person the Knicks acquired, last March, Randolph went on bereavement and missed three games to mourn the death of his girlfriends cousin. Now I don't know how close they were but athletes have taken less time off to mourn their own parents death than a girlfriends cousin. Anyway, there's more to this story. While on bereavement, Randolph, was spotted at a local strip club, where the bartender said he left without paying his $106 tab. Good riddance Zach and Good Luck New York, you're going to need it.
