Sometimes, competition can bring out the worst in people. I currently work as a salesperson in an electrical store. Although we are not on commission, it can still be a very competitive environment, especially while some of us are on temporary contracts! Some people are just plain not very nice, and seek to take advantage of customers for their own interests (of course, they may just be trying to feed their family...)
First of all, don't automatically suspect everyone who works in sales as being against you. The majority of people (at least where I work) would only want to help the customer and not take advantage. We are told to approach customers and ask if they need any help, and sometimes a customer may be accidentally asked by multiple salespeople while they are looking. Some customers react very negatively and assume we are trying to push them to purchase at this point, when this is not true. Any salesperson worth dealing with will leave you be if you say "I'm fine, thank you" or even better "I'm okay, I'll come and ask if I have any questions". If after this someone bothers you, do not buy from them as they obviously have the wrong attitude!
Always get as much information as possible on the product you are buying. This will allow you to make the best purchases but also to spot any dirty salespeople. If the salesman offers extras, ask for all the information on them, what are the features and benefits etc. If you are buying a television, you may well be offered a HDMI cable. If you are planning to get a blu-ray player or other HD equipment then this is a good idea, however if you are not planning to get this there is no need for the cable. You may save money in the long term if you buy the accessories and extras for products all at the same time, but don't rush into it, take the time to ask questions before you buy things.
If a salesperson genuinely tries to push you into a purchase, do not give in to them. In fact, do not deal with them at all. Remember, if they get their own way with you, they will continue to act in this rude manner. The big stores are aware that pushy selling leads to customers turning away and most stores train their staff against it. It will usually be worth your time to complain to the manager. Talk to the manager in a polite manner (remember, they have not done anything wrong) and a good manager will take your complaint seriously. If the manager is respectful, then let them pass you on to a better salesperson in the store. If the manager also seems to pushy, disrespectful or uninterested, the best thing to do is leave the store and go to a different one.
Stores are increasingly competing now not only over their prices but their level of customer service. Nobody should put up with pushy salespeople. Refusal to deal with anyone with an improper attitude benefits you as the customer, other customers and the good honest people that do also work in sales.
