As a long-time fan of USC football I am absolutely and totally opposed to firing Charlie Weis as Notre Dame's head football coach. Charlie is slowly and surely bleeding the Notre Dame football program of any glory it may have had within the last 20 years. I'm loving every minute of it.
Charlie Weis was hired three years ago after having spent several years as the Offensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots. Because the New England Patriots happen to of been a good football team at the time, Charlie was seen as some sort of offensive genius. However, it is rapidly becoming apparent that this is not the case.
Charlie was hired to be Notre Dame football coach, starting in the 2005 season. In his seventh game as head coach at Notre Dame he led the fighting Irish to a close loss to the University of Southern California Trojans. A couple of days later, the athletic director at Notre Dame decided to give Charlie a 10 year contract extension worth over $30 million. This contract doomed the Notre Dame football program to 10 years of mediocrity under Charlie's leadership.
Charlie is quite likely an extremely competent coach as a coordinator at the pro level. However, he's yet to demonstrate that he has any ability to motivate 18 to 21 year old kids who are playing at the college level. Professional players in the NFL are a completely different kind of football player. They are working a job, as opposed to college players who are students, significantly younger, and a lot less experienced than a more mature NFL player.
College players coming out of high school are also significantly less developed as athletes than an NFL player is. One of the biggest problems that Charlie seems to be running into these days is a complete lack of ability to develop young players properly. When he had fully trained NFL caliber players, he did fine. However, when he is given the task of training a younger kid who doesn't necessarily know how to play the game as well as a Pro, his deficiencies become rather obvious.
The first two years Charlie was at Notre Dame he had a reasonably experienced team along with a above average quarterback in Brady Quinn. However, Charlie completely failed to develop any of the younger talent on his squad, as evidenced by what happened this year with the quarterback situation. There is absolutely no excuse for Charlie to not have one of his other quarterbacks ready to play the game this fall after Brady Quinn graduated. He
