San Diego tourist magnets like Sea World and the zoo aren't necessarily for everyone. Luckily, this coastal California city also houses some hidden gems that will keep visitors and locals alike entertained without having to fight huge crowds and steep prices.
Balboa Park
Many visitors head straight for the world-famous San Diego Zoo, nestled inside Balboa Park, without giving its immediate surroundings a second glance, but Balboa Park is a treasure trove of attractions in itself. All ages can find a variety of fun places to wile away the hours here. Kids can find a colorful carousel and small train to ride. You can pass the afternoon looking at the galleries and talking to the artisans in the adobe buildings of the Spanish Village Art Center. There are also a host of museums, gardens, an IMAX theater, and delicious restaurants.
The park is spacious and scenic, with plenty of parking in various areas (the zoo's parking lot, of course, tends to resemble the zoo itself). Balboa Park lends itself to various interests, from a picnic lunch to an upscale dinner at The Prado restaurant.
Maritime Museum
You don't have to be a boating fanatic to appreciate the majesty of San Diego's collection of historical ships, which you can walk around on to get a feel for life at sea. The San Diego Maritime Museum offers tours of its anchored ships right along the harbor in the heart of San Diego. You can explore the Star of India, the oldest active ship in the world. Displays are set up throughout the ship to teach how the crew members sailed and lived. Kids can fantasize about being a pirate as they roam the deck and see the cannons below. There is also a submarine and a ferryboat to explore.
Del Mar Race Track
The horse racing track in Del Mar can be a fun way to spend an afternoon, but the real treat for all ages is "Daybreak in Del Mar." During the racing season on weekend mornings, you can eat a tasty breakfast right along the race track while the horses and jockeys go through their morning workouts. The view of the horses can't be beat, plus the jockeys bring the horses out near the entrance to give the visitors an up close viewing.
Harbor Cruises
San Diego's harbor offers boat cruises that you can take for a brief bout of sightseeing or a romantic dinner event at sunset. The Hornblower departs daily for a smooth sail with a breathtaking view of the cityscape as you dine. It's a fun, relaxing end to a day of parks and tours.
These hidden attractions are just the tip of the iceberg of what San Diego has to offer. With the lure of the beach, hiking locales, and unique shops and eateries, the city is vibrant and scenic. From its rich history to its natural landscape, San Diego is sure to keep you and your family coming back to discover more new adventures.
