Beginner's guide to snowboarding competitions

by ltdchef

Snowboarding competitions are a great way to meet new people, feed your competitive personality, and push your skills to the limit!

Snowboarding is one of few individual sports that has a collective feel to it. Competing riders help one another out with tricks, tips and training because it's in everyone's best interest to push the limits of such a young sport, and to help integrate it into the main stream.

Basic pointers - if you're new to halfpipe, you're going to have to yell "drop in" as loud as you can if you want a chance - there's a limited amount of space on that hill, and everyone wants those warmup runs. Don't let anyone snake you.

Don't be afraid to ask for a tip - if you're new to the sport, you're not going to be a huge threat to some of the better guys. It helps if you're young - but if you want to know how he really tweaked out that backside, just ask - if it was good enough for you to notice, he's probably feeling pretty good about it, and won't mind telling you about it.

If you're at an event that has a breakfast, bar night, dinner, whatever - go, even if you're tired or don't feel like it. You'll meet some of the best people in the world that way. Who knows, maybe you'll even score a sponsor.
