will be inside, and the decorative fabric will be outside.
- If gluing is the only choice, then glue the piece together. But beware, sewing is always a better option. Sewing looks cleaner, lasts longer, holds stronger, and avoids any possible chemical reactions with the plastic and metal of the phone.
- Either hand or machine sew the pieces together, about 1/2 inch from the edge on three sides, again leaving a fourth side as an opening. For a neat effect try using yarn for the sewing, or use the yarn quilting technique to tie the fabrics and seams together.
- Decide how the cozy will work. Will it have a strap like a purse, or be small to store in a purse? Will it need a belt loop, or pocket clip? Will it stay open, or close with a button or pull-string?
- This cozy will use a simple button closing method and be created for storing in a purse or pocket. The button will be round, light, and flat, so it doesn't hurt the phone. So, while the material is still inside out, sew a small hem around the opening of the cozy.
- Flip the cozy to the right side, put phone inside, and pull top flap down to measure where button should be. Mark with pin, remove cell phone from cozy. Sew the button onto the cozy in the indicated place.
- The put the phone back in, measure again, and mark where the cut should be on the flap. Take phone out, cut small hole, and either hand or machine sew a small reinforcement hem around the hole.
- Voila! Basically the cozy is done. Slip the phone into it, check size and closing, and enjoy!
CLOSINGS
- For alternate closing methods, try a drawstring. Just make the top hem a little larger and leave two ends open. Cut a long piece of ribbon and use a safety pin to thread it thru the cozy. Use beads and knots at each ribbon end to prevent it from slipping back into the hem. Pull ribbon and tie in bow, the cozy is closed.
- Tie closings are simple too. Sew a small piece of ribbon the front of the cozy, and a slightly longer piece to the back. Then just fold and roll the opening hem down, pull the back ribbon over, and tie with other ribbon in a pretty bow in front.
- The easiest closing, but most likely to break, is a basic choke tie. Sew about the middle inch of a long ribbon onto the back of the cozy, just a little above where the top of the phone ends. Pull ribbon to front and tie closed in a bow. You have a basic bag looking cozy with a simple close top.
ADDITIONS
- When adding any decoration to the cozy, it's important to remember a few tips. Will the decoration cause scratching? Just a sequin rubbing against the cozy could cause damage if the sequin is really strong and sharp.
- Will the decoration cause any damage if the phone is dropped? Some shapes and sizes of decorations can cause a sharp corner to damage the phone if it's dropped onto a really hard surface.
- Embellishments like embroidery, patches, craft paint, tiny beads, and craft pom-poms work really well on a cell phone cozy, and look adorable too. Stamps can create wonderful pictures and patterns.
- Just colorful yarn alone can be used to create neat pictures or patterns too. Try using the yarn to make an elegant monogrammed cozy, a doll looking cozy with hair, or a cozy with fluffy fringe.
- Use craft paint pens to carefully draw a silly face onto the cozy, making it an amusing storage item. Or cover the cozy in tacky, glittery pom-poms for a really obnoxious and off-the-wall look.
