Your best friend or someone you know just became a mom and you are excited for her, but what should you give her that will really show that you care? Your first impulse will be to grab all the cute tiny baby essentials, but that's what a baby shower is for. Here is a list of gifts for a new mom that even she didn't know she needed.

1. The first couple of weeks with baby is crazy and hectic you never know what day or time it is, so help the new mom remember when she fed the baby, how much or what kind of diaper she changed with a journal and a memory bracelet. If she is breastfeeding she can switch the bracelet to the the wrist of the side that she nursed last and use the beads to keep track of the time. If she is bottle feeding, the bracelet can still be used to keep track of time and how many bottles. Later on the bracelet can be used to keep track of how many glasses of water drank or any other thing that she needs to remember. The journal will help keep track of every other baby details that the doctor might want to know on the first well baby check up.

2. A mom always needs help with the house work! A gift of professional house cleaning service for the first six weeks is something every mom wishes for. Or you could help with the dishes and a few light chores.

3. Taking care of a baby leaves a mommy tired, too tired to cook sometimes, so help her out by bringing prepared meals, giving gift certificates to family friendly restaurants, or stocking her freezer with ready to eat meals.

4. New mom always feel like they need to get away sometime. What better escape then a day spa get-a-way? If spa certificates are a little out of budget, make your own spa basket for her . Fill a basket with a bath pillow, a few bath products, candles, soothing music, a do not disturb sign, and bottled water. I know I always feel better after a long soak.

5. Make dates for girl time. Take the new mommy out for some tea or coffee and have girl talk. Being a new mom makes one long for days before. Having a girls day will help any mom feel like a woman again and give her a break from being mom.

6. Jelly belly, that's what new moms are left with after giving birth and we are in a hurry to get rid of it. Give her a gift of a gym membership or offer to work out with her at home to a workout video. The adult interaction and conversation really helps a new mom stay out of the blues.

7. Now that the jelly is gone she'll need a new wardrobe. Give her a gift certificate to her favorite store for a new outfit to get her started. Make-up is part of a wardrobe too, so don't forget about that. A little lipstick always puts a smile on my face and it helps give a boost to start the day (even if I'm in my sweats with the baby at home).

8. How about when the new mom and her hubby needs some time out for a date? They'll need a babysitter. Print out a few coupons to give for babysitting service, a trusted friend is always the first choice for watching my kids. Trust me this will be a much appreciated and used gift so be prepared to clean baby drool!

I have been a new mom twice and the above gifts are things that I have received, made, and loved. Being a new mom shifts the attention to the new bundle of joy and people often forget about the new mom. Show her how special she is by pampering to her and her needs. Sure she'll need baby items, but again the baby gets a shower; it's the mom's turn to be showered.
