Poetry: Drug addiction

"Dad" An Addict's Life

Our poor dad, he looks so frail
It really is such a shame.
His mind is now gone,
He doesn't even know his name.

Over the years he had so many
Reasons for his addictions.
But now he has to pay, death
Will be his final conviction.

Our poor dad, too bad he will
Never know his grand-children's smiles.
Enough of that now, I want to hold his hand,
He only has a little while.

It's so sad to watch him die
At the age of thirty-eight.
The treatment for his illness - rehab
He said it could wait.

"I'm young! I feel good. There
Is nothing to fear!"
Even at that time, death for him
Was drawing near.

The saddest question I have for you dad,
The answer I will never know;
Even though you had so many reasons to use,
Weren't we enough of a reason to let the addiction go?

You are so young to leave us dad,
But I guess it's OK.
Drinking and the drugs do help to
Make the pain go away.

Every sip that I take, is in
Remembrance of you.
You showed me the ropes, my friend -
Now I know what to do, too.

Do not worry about me dad,
As your life's end draws near.
I know you could have chose not to,
Hey, it's all good, in our family we like our beer.

I learned from your mistakes, dad.
I have a grip on what I drink.
Controlling it is the key -
Who cares what other people think?

My children will grow up having fun,
You were always cool in that way.
As long as it's not too much,
I can handle drinking everyday.

The drugs, well you know, they come
In handy when life is stressful and hard.
Once things get better, then all that stuff -
I will be able to discard.

So, here's to you dad, cheers
On your last day to live -
I have so much to teach my children,
So many secrets to give.

Even with all your baggage, you still seem too young
To exit this world, you are only thirty-eight!
You were right when you said "What's wrong with partying?
Life is too short to let all the fun wait!"

I'll tell my young family about you,
I'm so sad that you will really be gone.
I just can't shake this feeling like somethings not...
Never mind, no, no...nothing's wrong.
